Gatineau Park
The Gatineau Park (French. Gatineau Park , Eng. Gatineau Park ) is a natural park in the region Outaouais north of Canada's capital Ottawa . It lies between the valleys of the Ottawa and Gatineau rivers and extends over 361 km². The park is managed by the National Capital Commission .
nature
The park essentially comprises the so-called Gatineau Hills and is home to several lakes . The area is almost entirely forested. Around 50 different species of mammals and over 230 different species of birds are native to the park.
Facilities
Due to its proximity to the capital, a number of federal government facilities are located within the park:
- The Farm , residence of the Speaker of the House of Commons
- Conference Center at Meech Lake (made famous by the Meech Lake Accord )
- Mackenzie King Estate , former Prime Minister's estate
There are also numerous viewpoints and storage areas in the park . In winter, some streets in the park are prepared as cross- country trails . The Gatineau Loppet ski marathon has been held every February in Gatineau Park since 1983 .
