Matagami is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . The city is located in the regional county municipality ( municipalité régionale de comté ) Jamésie and was founded in 1963 after deposits were discovered in the area. North of the city is the lake of the same name, Lac Matagami .
Matagami is the starting point of the 620 km Route de la Baie James to Radisson , which was built in the early 1970s to develop the construction sites of the Baie James hydropower project .
