Construction of the road (1972)

The Route de la Baie James is a 620 km long trunk road in the Canadian province of Québec . It runs from Matagami to Radisson in the Jamésie region . The road, which is a northern continuation of Route 109 , is paved throughout and is maintained even in winter. It has a certain tourist significance for travelers to the Baie James .

The Route de la Baie James was built to access the various remote construction sites of Hydro-Québec's Baie James hydropower project . In particular, the construction machinery, which weighs up to 500 tons, should be able to be easily transported. Construction work was completed in just 420 days and the official opening took place on February 11, 1972.

The road leads through largely unpopulated area. Four side streets branch off to the west and lead to various Cree settlements on Baie James . To the east branch off the 666 km long route Transtaïga and the 424 km long route du Nord . Bridges span several broad rivers. The only rest stop is at kilometer 381; it is operated around the clock and offers the only petrol station as well as food and accommodation options. For safety reasons, travelers should report to the registration office at kilometer 6, and there are several emergency telephones along the road (there is no cellular network).
