The Rivière Broadback ( English Broadback River ) is a river in northern Québec in Canada .

It flows into Rupert Bay (a small bay at the southern end of James Bay ), a short distance south of the Rupert Estuary and the Cree settlement Waskaganish there . The largest lake on the Broadback river is Lac Evans .

The Rivière Broadback - along with the Rivière Nottaway and the Rivière Rupert - were originally intended for hydraulic engineering development and its diversion as part of the Baie-James hydropower project . In 1972, however, the realization of this hydro-electric project began further north on the rivers La Grande Rivière and Rivière Eastmain , so that so far only the Rupert has been diverted from the so-called NBR project.

The river is a popular canoe river and is ideal for multi-day tours. A bridge crosses the Rivière Broadback along the Route de la Baie James .

Tributaries

Since the Broadback runs relatively close to the northern edge of its catchment area, most of the main tributaries flow in from the left. Important tributaries in the downstream direction are:

  • Rivière Châtillon
  • Rivière Assinica
  • Rivière Coigne (right)
  • Rivière Nipukatasi
  • Rivière Salamandre
  • Rivière Ouasouagami
  • Rivière Colomb
  • Rivière Kaminahikuschit
  • Rivière Natouacamisie
  • Rivière Machisipi
  • Rivière Lepallier
