Located in the Longueuil agglomeration |
Brossard ( bʁɔsaʁ ) is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the Montérégie administrative region across from Montreal . Brossard is part of the Longueuil agglomeration , has an area of 45.20 km² and has 79,273 inhabitants (2011). From 2002 to 2006, Brossard was a district of Longueuil .
geography
Brossard is located on the east bank of the St. Lawrence River in the Rive-Sud region , in largely flat terrain. An eight-kilometer section of the St. Lawrence Seaway runs through the city . The city is divided into different sectors, with street names starting with the same letter (with the exception of the main streets). Neighboring municipalities are Montreal in the west, Saint-Lambert in the northwest, Longueuil in the north, Carignan in the east, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the southeast and La Prairie in the south.
history
Brossard was founded in 1958 when part of the parish of La Prairie-de-la-Madeleine received town status. The new parish (which then had 3,400 inhabitants) was named after the then mayor, Georges-Henri Brossard, whose family had resided in the area for more than two centuries. Under his leadership, the initially rural community grew into a densely populated suburb, to which the opening of the Pont Champlain motorway bridge over the St. Lawrence River in 1962 contributed in particular . In 1964 Greenfield Park ceded part of its municipal area, and in 1978 Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Cœur was incorporated.
The government of the province of Québec ordered the merger of Brossard and other municipalities with the city of Longueuil , which came into effect on January 1, 2002. Brossard now formed a district of Longueuil. This approach met with great resistance in parts of the population. In a referendum on January 20, 2004, 80.9% of the voters were in favor of the separation, although the required quorum of 35% yes-votes of all voters was only just exceeded. The community was re-established on January 1, 2006, but had to cede some competencies to the community association of the agglomeration Longueuil . Brossard is a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association founded in 2000 .
population
According to the 2011 census, Brossard had 79,273 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 1,753.8 inh / km². 47.4% of the population stated French as their main language, while English accounted for 12.1%. 1.4% said they were bilingual (French and English), 6.3% other languages and multiple answers. Only French spoke 23.1%. In 2001, 64.5% of the population were Roman Catholic , 7.5% Protestant , 5.5% Muslim , 4.8% Orthodox Christian and 11.5% non-denominational.
Brossard is considered to be particularly multicultural and has the highest proportion of immigrants in Québec with around 30% of the population. The Chinese community is particularly important with around 12%. No fewer than 23 ethnic groups are represented with more than 1% of the population. The most important non-official languages according to the number of native speakers are Chinese (10.2%), Arabic (4.3%), Spanish (4.0%), Persian (2.3%), Vietnamese (1.9%), Greek ( 1.6%) and Romanian (1.5%).
traffic
The city is accessed by several highways. On the Pont Champlain , which leads over the Saint Lawrence River to the Île des Sœurs and the Île de Montréal , the Autoroute 10 to Sherbrooke , the Autouroute 15 towards New York and the Autoroute 20 towards Lévis join . Another motorway, Autoroute 30 along the eastern city limits, serves as a large bypass of the Montreal metropolitan area.
The company Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL) is responsible for local public transport . It operates numerous bus routes that connect Brossard with Longueuil, other neighboring communities and with downtown Montreal. The Pont Champlain is to be replaced by a new building by 2018; tracks for a light rail are also planned. Another important traffic artery is the six-lane route 132 in a north-south direction through the city center.
