Barentin is a French city with 11,822 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-Maritime in the region Normandy .

geography

The city is 17 kilometers northwest of Rouen and approximately 125 kilometers from Paris . The Austreberthe River , which divides the city in half, runs through the village .

Saint Martin Church
  • Saint-Martin church , neo-Romanesque structure, was built between 1855 and 1860 according to the plans of Désiré Martin and Charles Robert. The interior of the church is deliberately designed to be simple. The stained glass from 1856 was almost completely destroyed in 1944.
  • Saint-Helier chapel , built in the 16th century, formerly part of a monastery
Viaduct of the Paris-Le Havre railway line
  • Railway viaduct , with 27 arches, 480 meters long and 33 meters high, is used to cross the valley and river for the Paris - Le Havre route . The viaduct was built by Joseph Locke in1847. It is the city's landmark and can also be found on the city's coat of arms.
  • Musée dans la Ville (museum in the city), 160 sculptures by Auguste Rodin , Antoine Bourdelle , Marcel Gromaire , Paul Belmondo , Léon-Ernest Drivier and other artists that make the whole city a museum. This also includes a replica of the Statue of Liberty . This served as a prop in the 1969 comedy film Das Superhirn . The objects in the Musée dans la Ville were brought together by André Marie, who was Mayor of Barentin from 1945 to 1974.

In the literature

The novel "La Bete Humaine" (" The animal in man ") by Emile Zola , set in the railroad milieu around 1870, is set partly in the fictional village of La-Croix-de-Maufrage, "exactly in the middle between the stations Malaunay and Barentin, four kilometers from each station ".

  • Père Jacques de Jésus (birth name: Lucien Bunel ), (1900–1945), Carmelite Father, Righteous Among the Nations , was born in Barentin. A sculpture by the sculptor Henri Bouchard commemorates him on the east side of the Saint-Martin church
