Pavilly is a French town with 6308 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-Maritime in the region Normandy .
geography
Pavilly is about 22 kilometers northwest of Rouen in the Pays de Caux . The Austreberthe , a tributary of the Seine , and the Saffimbec river flow through the municipality .
history
The Pavilly Priory was founded around 662 by Philibert , Abbot of Jumièges . It was destroyed by the Normans and rebuilt in 1090. It was owned by a congregation of Francis Sisters from 1881 to 1905 and was then abandoned.
politics
Pavilly belongs to the community association Communauté de communes Caux-Austreberthe . Since 1972 there has been a town partnership with Freckenhorst in Germany.
Attractions
The Esneval Castle is since 1970 as a monument historique classified. In the 11th century there was a mill in its place, this is recorded in a document from Wilhelm the Conqueror . The first castle of the Seigneurs of Pavilly was destroyed in the 15th century. From 1469 to 1478 Robert de Dreux (1406-1498), was Baron of Esneval, the present castle and the chapel Saint-Thomas-de-Cantorbéry built. The chapel was destroyed and rebuilt in 1770. The castle and chapel are now privately owned.
The Sainte-Austreberthe chapel was built around 1091, it belonged to the priory and has been entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques since 1934 ( inscrit MH ).
Culinary specialties
The city is known for its cheese, Neufchâtel , and for its calvados .
Personalities
- Saint Austreberta ( French: Austreberthe ) (630–704) was abbess in Pavilly. It worked a number of miracles, but is little known outside of Upper Normandy.
