Austreberta also Austrebertha, Austreberthe or Austreberthe von Pavilly (born probably 630 in Thérouanne ; died February 10, 704 in the Abbey of Pavilly ) is venerated in the Catholic Church as a miraculous saint . It is little known outside of Normandy . In Saint-Denis-le-Ferment in the Eure department , a chapel commemorates them, to which a pilgrimage takes place on Whit Monday.

Austreberthe is also the name of two communities, one in Haute-Normandie , the other in Artois , and a stream .

Life

The daughter of Badefrid, a follower of the kings from the house of the Merovingians , and the Alemannic princess Framchildis, entered the Ponthieu monastery (Portus Icius, today Port-le-Grand ) around 650 . Around 662 she became the first abbess of the newly founded Pavilly Monastery near Rouen , which had close ties to the Jumièges Abbey . Their relics were brought to Montreuil-sur-Mer in the 9th century .

The saint and her nuns are said to have washed the sacristy linen of the Jumièges Abbey a few miles from Pavilly, and a trained donkey is said to have brought them from one monastery to another by himself. One day a wolf is said to have devoured the donkey. Austreberta is said to have appeared and ordered the wolf to continue doing the donkey's work; the wolf continued to comply. The donkey oak (Chène à l'âne) later stood on the scene. The miracle is depicted on a stained glass window in the chapel in Sainte-Austreberthe (Seine-Maritime) (or Sainte-Austreberthe (Pas-de-Calais) ).
