Pays de Caux

The Pays de Caux is a region in Normandy that belongs to the Paris Basin . It is a chalk plateau of Normandy north of the Seine , which extends to the cliffs of the English Channel . The Pays de Caux makes up most of the Seine-Maritime department .

The main cities in the region are: Le Havre , Dieppe , Fécamp , Yvetot and Étretat . The population and their dialect are called Cauchois .

In Gallic times, the Pays de Caux was settled by the Caletes , whose main town was Caracotinum - today's Harfleur - which was later replaced by Juliobona ( Lillebonne ). At the time of the Merovingians the area belonged to the County of Talou . With the establishment of Normandy and the county of Rouen , Vikings settled in large numbers in the country.
