Roumare is a French commune with 1,508 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-Maritime in the region Normandy . It is located a few kilometers northwest of Rouen, belongs to the Arrondissement of Rouen and the canton of Notre-Dame-de-Bondeville .
history
According to legend, Roumare owes its name to a Rotmarus , to whom King Dagobert I gave this area as a reward for his services in the 7th century. Another fabulous explanation goes back to the Normans Rollo , who leads an oak tree, a necklace and a pool of Rollonis mare .
In reality it has not been proven that the place name has anything to do with these people. The second component -mare is probably the Norman root word mare ("pond", "pond") of Anglo-Scandinavian descent like the other numerous -mare place names of the Caux area, and the first component Rou- is a personal name Rodulf or Rolf .
According to tradition, the fountain in the center of the village is connected to the vaulted cellars of the Abbey of Saint-Georges de Boscherville and the Abbey of Jumièges .
Roumare is the result of a municipal restructuring in the 19th century, when the two old parishes of Saint-Thomas-la-Chaussée (Sanctus Thomas de Caceya) and Roumare (Rolmara in the 11th century and Roumara in the 14th century) were merged.
