Notre-Dame de Cunault - Capital with scenes from the life of St. Philibertus

Philibert (or Filibert) was the only son of Filibaud, a high official in Vic or Vic-Jour ( Latin Vicus Iulius , today Vic-Fezensac in the Gers department), where he also became bishop . He was born around 617/18 in the old town of Eause ( Guyenne ) and was brought up by excellent teachers in Vic.

After his training, his father, who had access to King Dagobert I († 638/639), gave him a place at the court of the Merovingians , where he met Ouen († 686), whose esteem he acquired.

Dissatisfied with the insignificant life at court, he went to the monastery at the age of 20. His choice fell on the newly founded Rebais Abbey in the diocese of Meaux , where he brought in a large part of his property, and where Agilus († around 650) was abbot, a friend of Ouen.

Almost 20 years later, in 654, he founded the Jumièges Abbey near Rouen on fertile land in a loop of the Seine , where he used to hunt together with King Dagobert.

When he learned that the caretaker Ebroin († 681) had the Bishop of Autun Leodegar (Saint-Léger) killed (October 2, 679), he brought the crime to court, whereupon Ebroin Ouen, now Archbishop of Rouen , with it instructed to get him aside. Ouen submitted and had him imprisoned; the imprisonment, however, was tolerable and did not last long, as Ebroin was soon murdered himself.

After his release, Philibert retired to the Noirmoutier monastery where he died in 684.

Monuments

In 847 the monks of Noirmoutier established a priory in Déas in his honor , from which Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu developed. At the time of the Norman raids , his relics were brought to Tournus to safety, where they were kept in the Saint-Philibert monastery church built for him . Before that, they made a stopover in Notre-Dame de Cunault , on the Loire. There is a capital with scenes from the life of St. Philibert on a column of the nave halfway up. The inscription of Latin capital letters is: S PHILIBERTVS
