Marcel Gromaire

Marcel Gromaire (born July 24, 1892 in Noyelles-sur-Sambre , France , † April 11, 1971 in Paris ) was a French painter and graphic artist . He is one of the most important representatives of modern French painting in the 20th century.

Life

Marcel Gromaire attended the independent painting academies at Montparnasse in Paris . His art was shaped by his experiences in the First World War on the front in Alsace and on the Somme , where he was wounded in 1916.

The work of Paul Cézanne also influenced Gromaire's work. His abstract paintings were mostly in ocher and brown with some red and blue accents. His first exhibition took place in 1932 as a group exhibition together with the artists Jean Fautrier , Jean Pougny and Jean René Bazaine in Paris. From the fifties and sixties in particular, his art gained international attention and recognition. For example, Marcel Gromaire took part in documenta II in Kassel in 1959 in the graphics department with some works . His works include drawings , oil paintings , etchings , watercolors and tapestries .
