history
The Battle of Castiglione took place near the village on August 5, 1796 . During Napoléon Bonaparte's Italian campaign , an attack by the Austrians under their commander Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser was repulsed.
After the battle of Solferino on June 24, 1859, innumerable wounded were brought to the town, which was about 8 kilometers from the fighting, and were given first aid there.
The terrorist organization Gruppe Ludwig carried out its last arson attack in Castiglione in 1984, in which the allegedly only group members were arrested.
The name Castiglione is widespread in Italy and is derived from Castello (castle). In fact, there is a large fort in the city center . The Basilica of San Luigi Gonzaga is dedicated to the city patron Aloisius von Gonzaga . Another attraction is the International Museum of the Red Cross , which opened in 1959 and has a very extensive range of information.
