history

Cassellucchio was first mentioned in an imperial charter in 1045 as the property of the Bishop of Mantua, that is, it belonged to the dominion of the Canossa until the area fell to the Gonzaga in 1328 . At this time a castle already existed, which was renovated by the Gonzaga around 1370. During the War of the Spanish Succession , the castle was destroyed by French and German troops, as was the village and the local church. In 1796 the area was the scene of armed conflicts: Austrian troops fled from Napoleon's . The Commander-in-Chief of the Austrian Army in Italy, General Beaulieu, spent one night in the city.

After the Battle of Magenta on June 4, 1859, the Austrians gathered in Castellucchio, where they stayed until June 18. The first French soldiers did not arrive in the city until June 30th and were greeted with enthusiasm by the population as liberators from Austrian rule.

In the Treaty of Villafranca , Castellucchio was added to the new Kingdom of Italy .
