Castel Goffredo is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 12,674 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy . The municipality is located about 29 kilometers northwest of Mantua and about 32 kilometers southeast of Brescia . Castel Goffredo borders directly on the province of Brescia .
history
From the 9th century until 1115, the area was under the rule of the Prince-Bishops of Brescia. Eventually the population changed sides and came under the protection of the princes of Mantua in 1137. In the meantime, from 1348 to 1404, the Visconti of Milan ruled the region. In 1441 the Gonzaga family regained power over the area in Mantua. From 1603 to 1707 it was the Duchy of Milan that ruled here. In 2002 the municipality was awarded the title città (city). The medieval church Chiesa di Santa Maria del Consorzio was demolished in 1986.
Economy and Transport
The city has flourished economically over the past two hundred years. Castel Goffredo became known in particular through the textile industry, which produced tights here .
