Johannes Bu (o) chstab , Latinized Literam , (* around 1499 in Winterthur ; † August 29, 1528 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) was a Catholic theologian and schoolmaster of the Reformation.

Life

Johannes Buch was born in Winterthur around 1499. Nothing is known about his social background or his education. In 1522 he was parish administrator in Herisau . After a brief activity in Mellingen , he became a schoolmaster in Bremgarten in 1523 .

Already in Bremgarten he wrote a larger piece of writing against the Zwinglian Reformation , but could not find a printer. That is why he divided his manuscript into ten individual writings, a large part of which was published by his untimely death. From 1524 to 1528 he was the schoolmaster and recorder of the canon monastery in Zofingen . In 1526 he took part in the Baden disputation ; however, no request to speak has been recorded.

As a member of the Zofingen Augustinian Canons' Foundation, he appeared at the Bern disputation in 1528 and was one of the few vehement representatives of the old faith. Well prepared, he tried to establish the old church tradition with evidence from the Bible and the church fathers . After the subsequent introduction of the Reformation in Bern and the secularization of the monastery of Zofingen, he was appointed school and singing master in Freiburg. He died there the following year.
