Casaloldo is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2755 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy . The municipality is located about 27 kilometers west-northwest of Mantua on the Tartaro .

history

The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age . The first reliable mention of the place dates back to the year 964. In the Middle Ages the castle - built at the end of the 11th to the beginning of the 12th century - was the seat of the Counts of Casalodi, one of numerous branches of the Counts Ugoni-Longhi. Since Count Alberto I Casaloldo (approx. 1165–1218 / 19) became a retainer for Otto IV , they supported the German emperors as Ghibellines . They lived mostly in Mantua , where they also provided a bishop with Filippo (approx. 1240–1303). In the second half of the 13th century they had to submit to their former vassals, the Gonzaga , who rose to become lords of Mantua. The family died out in Brescia around 1400.

Only a stone gate tower from the 15th century when the city came to the Republic of Venice remains of the castle, which was once built on a moth made of wood and earth .

A battle between the troops of the Marquis of Mantua, Gianfrancesco II Gonzaga , and the Republic of Venice took place near Casaloldo on May 10, 1509 , when the Gonzaga wanted to seize the city.
