Pegognaga is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 7011 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy . The municipality is located about 19 kilometers south-southeast of Mantua . The Po flows about 6 kilometers north of the village.

history

The name of the place and the community is said to go back to a Roman patrician named Pecunius , who set up a farm here in the 1st century AD. In the 4th century the place with the name Flexum is proven.

In San Giacomo Maggiore church dedicated in the district Polesine is the painting Martirio di San Giacomo and Josiah of cigoli (1605, oil on canvas, 305 x 215 cm).

The municipality is located on the A22 autostrada which , coming from Modena , leads to Mantua and Verona and on to the Brenner Pass. There is a train station on the Suzzara – Ferrara railway line .
