Borgo Virgilio is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 14,804 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy .

The municipality was created on February 4, 2014 through the merger of the two previously independent municipalities of Borgoforte and Virgilio . The municipal seat is in Virgilio, about 5 kilometers south-southwest of the city center of Mantua .

geography

The municipality is bordered by the Mincio rivers in the northeast and the Po in the south. Borgo Virgilio is one of the 13 Lombard municipalities whose municipal area forms the Parco del Mincio Natural Park .

history

The Roman poet Virgil is said to be born in the small town of Andes (in the Pietole [Vecchia] district of the Virgilio fraction ) .
