Virgilio ( Lombard : Vergili ) is a fraction of the municipality ( comune ) Borgo Virgilio in the province of Mantua ( Lombardy region ). Virgilio merged with the municipality of Borgoforte to form the new municipality of Borgo Virgilio, effective February 4, 2014 . The place had 11,255 inhabitants on December 31, 2013. Neighboring communities were Bagnolo San Vito , Borgoforte, Curtatone and Mantua .

history

The Roman poet Virgil is said to have been born in the small town of Andes (in the district of Pietole [Vecchia]) . The municipality of Virgilio was formed as Quattroville in 1805, initially from the districts of Bellaguardia, Cerese, Parenza and Pietola and has belonged to the province of Mantua since 1868. The community was given its current name in 1901. Its current form (three districts) was created in 1925 after several changes of area.

Economy and Transport

Smaller mechanical engineering companies and elastomer processing businesses shape the local economy. Virgilio is on Strada Statale 62 and Strada Statale 413 , which leads to the A22 autostrada from Verona to Modena . The nearest train station is in Mantua.
