Ali Maher Pasha
Ali Maher Pasha ( Arabic علي ماهر باشا, * 1882 in Cairo ; † August 25, 1960 in Geneva ) was an Egyptian politician who was Prime Minister of Egypt four times between 1936 and 1952.
Life
Ali Maher joined the Wafd party founded by Saad Zaghlul Pascha in 1919 . In 1923 he was instrumental in drafting the Egyptian constitution . In Ahmed Ziwar Pascha's cabinet he was Minister of Education from 1924 to 1926 and Minister of Finance from 1928 to 1929 under Muhammad Mahmoud Pasha . For a short time he was also a member of Ismail Sedki Pasha's cabinet . In 1936 he became Prime Minister for a few months for the first time. At the beginning of the Second World War he was again Prime Minister. When he refused to break off diplomatic relations after Italy entered the war in 1940, he was dismissed under pressure from the British government and interned from 1942 until the end of the war. Between January and March 1952 he was again Prime Minister; he held this post for the last time from July to September 1952 after the Free Officers' coup. After arguments with the revolutionaries about land reform, he withdrew from politics.
