Curtatone is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 14,990 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy . Since 2002 the municipality has been called città (city). The administrative seat of the municipality is located in the district of Montanara . Fractions are Buscoldo, Eremo, Grazie, Levata, Montanara, Ponteventuno, San Lorenzo, San Silvestro, Curtatone and Mezzalana. Grazie is a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Curtatone is about 6 kilometers west of Mantua below the Parco del Mincio and the river of the Mincio .

history

During the first Italian War of Independence , a battle between the troops of the Austrian Empire under the command of Josef Radetzky and the vastly outnumbered troops of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany took place at Curtatone and Montanara on May 29, 1848 , led by a regiment of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and voluntary associations from Naples as well as students and university professors from various Tuscan universities. The battle ended in an Austrian victory, but helped the allied Piedmontese troops to reorganize and defeat the Austrians at Goito the next day .

The Strada statale 10 Padana Inferiore runs through the municipality from Turin to Monselice . The Cremona -Mantua railway line runs through the municipality, but the nearest train station is in Castellucchio . At Curtatone there is a small airfield ( Aviosuperficie Città di Curtatone ) for general aviation .
