Monteprandone (in the local dialect: Munneprannù ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 12,881 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Ascoli Piceno in Marche . The municipality borders directly on the province of Teramo and is about 21 kilometers northeast of Ascoli Piceno . It is about 6 kilometers to the east to the Adriatic Sea .

Legend has it that a fortress was built in the 9th century by a Frankish knight in the entourage of Charlemagne . But it wasn't until 1039 that the place was first mentioned in a document.

The former salt road Via Salaria leads through the district of Centobuchi from the Adriatic Sea, the former fortified port of Castrum Truentinum to Rome . Today this is Strada statale 4 . There is a small train station on the non-electrified railway line from Ascoli Piceno to San Benedetto del Tronto . At Monteprandone there is a small airfield ( Aviosuperficie Tronto ) for general aviation .
