The Via Salaria is an ancient salt road that led from the Adriatic coast over the Apennines to Rome . Today it is integrated into the Italian trunk road network as SS 4 .

history

During the time of the Etruscan rule , it secured Rome the de facto salt monopoly and was a source of the city's wealth. It was interrupted during the conflicts with the Sabines , which led to serious economic problems in Rome. The Via Salaria is one of the oldest trade routes in Italy from around 400 BC. Chr.

The Via Salaria led from Rome to the Adriatic Sea at Castrum Truentinum . One of the most important Roman bridges on the way was the Ponte Salario over the Aniene . Another bridge, the Ponte di Quintodecimo , crosses the Tronto .
