geography
McMasterville is located in the Rive-Sud region , on the left bank of the Rivière Richelieu . This tributary of the St. Lawrence River also forms the eastern boundary of the municipality. It belongs to the Montérégie hills and forms a landmark that can be seen from afar. McMasterville has grown together with Belœil , Mont-Saint-Hilaire and Otterburn Park to form an agglomeration with over fifty thousand inhabitants. Neighboring municipalities are Belœil in the north, Otterburn Park in the east, Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu in the south and Saint-Basile-le-Grand in the west.
history
The current municipality originally belonged to Belœil. In 1878 the Hamilton Powder Company (later Canadian Explosives Limited ) opened an explosives factory. A settlement for the factory workers was built around it. The place is named after William McMaster , the chairman of the company and founder of McMaster University . In 1917, McMasterville was separated from Belœil and declared a separate municipality.
