history
Around a stop on the Longueuil - Saint-Hyacinthe railway line opened in 1848, a settlement developed east of Mont Saint-Bruno. Since the nearest church was quite far away, the farmer Basile Daigneault petitioned the establishment of a new parish, which the diocese approved in 1870. A year later the civil parish was founded, named after Daignault's patron Saint Basil the Great . In 1876 the church called for in the petition was consecrated. The place grew rapidly, so that in 1893 the breakpoint was replaced by a train station. In 1969 the community received city status. On August 23, 1988, a PCB warehouse burned down completely; due to the toxic fumes, over five thousand residents had to be temporarily evacuated. The city has been a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association since 2000 .
