Cap-Santé is a city in the south of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the administrative region Capitale-Nationale , about 45 km west of the provincial capital Québec . The administrative seat of the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) Portneuf has an area of 54.79 km² and has 2,996 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Cap-Santé lies on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River , which is about four kilometers wide at this point. Immediately on the river bank, the terrain rises steeply before turning into an extensive plateau that is about 50 to 70 meters above the water level. The settlement area extends for several kilometers along the edge of this plain.
Neighboring municipalities are Portneuf in the west, Saint-Basile in the north, Pont-Rouge in the northeast and Donnacona in the east. On the opposite side of the St. Lawrence River is Sainte-Croix .
history
In 1679 the parish of Sainte-Famille-du-Cap-Santé was founded. While the first part of the name refers to the Holy Family , the origin of the second part is disputed. Legend has it that soldiers were cured of a mysterious disease when they went ashore here. In old French the word sente denotes a channel in a river; santé (health) may have developed from this due to incorrect transmission in documents . The community was founded in 1855; this received city status in 2000.
Attractions
In Cap-Santé there are some buildings of particular cultural and historical value. The Maison Pagé-Rinfret is classified as a National Historic Site of Canada . This two-story half - timbered house was built in 1720 and is a typical example of New France architecture and the French-Canadian house building tradition. Another important cultural monument is the two-tower parish church of Sainte-Famille, built between 1754 and 1767 (with an adjacent rectory). It is the largest church in the country, built during the French rule. The ruins of Fort Saint-Jacques and the Maison Allsopp built on the same site are also listed.
