River course

The river arises 10 km southeast of Malone at the confluence of its two headwaters, East Branch and West Branch Trout River . The Middle Branch Trout River flows into the East Branch shortly before it. As the Trout River , the river flows in a predominantly northerly direction through Franklin County . It flows east past Malone, passes the place Constable , takes up the Little Trout River on the right and after 35 km reaches the state border with Canada. North of Malone, New York State Route 30 runs along the river. In the regional county town of Le Haut-Saint-Laurent in Canada, Québec Route 138 runs along the Rivière Trout. The river gradually turns to the northeast and flows into the Rivière Châteauguay about 1.5 km south of Huntingdon after a total distance of 55 km . On the lower reaches of Canada there are two small dams on the Rivière Trout: Barrage St. Onge and Barrage Hooker . The river drains an area of 427 km². The mean discharge at the Kelvingrove gauge is 6.4 m³ / s.

Naming
