The first colonists from France arrived in the region around 1650. In March 1658, a chapel was built on an estate transferred from Étienne de Lessard. A second followed in 1661. In 1787 the church was enlarged. The present church was consecrated in 1876, and in 1887 the Pope elevated it to a minor basilica ; However, the church burned down in 1922, so that two years later the new building had to be started, which was consecrated ten years later. During his visit to Canada, John Paul II was also received in the basilica. The city of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré was created in 1973 through the amalgamation of several municipalities. Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré has been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association since 2002 .
