geography
Repentigny is located in the Rive-Nord region , on the western bank of the Saint Lawrence River . The Rivière L'Assomption flows in a north-south direction and flows into the Rivière des Prairies on the southern outskirts ; this in turn meets the St. Lawrence River after a short distance. The urban area also includes several offshore islands in the river. Opposite the river mouth is the Île de Montréal . Neighboring municipalities are L'Épiphanie and L'Assomption in the north, Saint-Sulpice in the northeast, Verchères in the east, Varennes in the southeast, Charlemagne in the south, Terrebonne in the southwest and Mascouche in the west.
history
Pierre Le Gardeur, French admiral and director of the Compagnie de la Nouvelle France , was awarded the area as a seigneurie in 1647 . His son Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur had the Repentigny settlement built at the mouth of the Rivière L'Assomption in 1670. It was named after his family's home, the village of Repentigny in Normandy . Although the new settlement formed the starting point of the Chemin du Roy from 1737 , it hardly grew until the end of the 19th century and only had a few hundred inhabitants. This changed at the beginning of the 20th century when the Montreal upper class began to use the village as a tourist destination. In 1957 Repentigny received city status. In 2002 it merged with the municipality of Le Gardeur (on the opposite bank of the Rivière L'Assomption), which increased the city by 40 km² and over 17,000 inhabitants. Repentigny is a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association founded in 2000 .
