Mascouche is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec . It is located in the administrative region of Lanaudière , just over 30 km north of Montreal . Mascouche belongs to the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) Les Moulins , has an area of ​​106.64 km² and has 42,491 inhabitants (2011).

Mascouche is located in the Rive-Nord region , around five kilometers from the north bank of the Rivière des Mille Îles . The terrain is largely flat and is drained by the heavily meandering tributary Rivière Mascouche . The municipal area also includes the Domaine-Guilbeault, Lac-Samson and Mascouche-Ouest settlements. Neighboring municipalities are Saint-Roch-de-l'Achigan in the north, L'Épiphanie in the northeast, Repentigny in the east and Terrebonne in the south and west.

history

From 1647, today's urban area belonged to the Seigneurie von Repentigny . In 1717 the first settlers settled on the banks of the Rivière Mascouche. This name has been documented since 1722; in the Algonquin language it means "little bear". In 1750 the parish of Saint-Henri-de-Mascouche was founded. One year after the abolition of the manor in 1855, the civil parish of the same name was founded. This received city status in 1971 and was renamed Mascouche. The city has been a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association since 2000 .

According to the 2011 census, Mascouche had 42,491 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 398.5 inh / km². 93.5% of the population stated French as their main language, the share of English was 2.4%. 0.6% said they were bilingual (French and English), other languages ​​and multiple answers made up 3.5%. Only French spoke 60.2%. In 2001, 93.0% of the population were Roman Catholic , 2.0% Protestant and 3.9% of no religion.

On the southern outskirts of the city, two highways cross, the Autoroute 25 from Montreal to the northern suburbs and the Autoroute 640 along the Rivière des Mille Îles. A main road of supraregional importance is route 125 towards the Laurentine Mountains . Several CRT Lanaudière bus routes connect Mascouche with the surrounding communities and the bus station in Terrebonne . Since December 2014 there has been an AMT train connection via Repentigny to Montreal.

Mascouche Airport is located parallel to Autoroute 640, about three kilometers from the city center. It is used for general aviation , has an asphalt runway with a length of 914 meters and is the base of several flight schools .
