history

In 1683 the officer Michel-Sidrac Dugué de Boisbriand was awarded the Seigneurie Mille-Îles. The settlement of the area did not start until the middle of the 18th century. In 1916, the community received city status and the name Sainte-Thérèse. With the opening of a railway line in 1875, Sainte-Thérèse transformed into an industrial settlement. Four piano factories in particular were of great economic importance (the last one closed in 1989). Sicard Industries, founded in 1950, was at times the world's largest manufacturer of snow blowers . From 1966 to 2002 General Motors operated an automobile plant (Sainte-Thérèse Assembly) , in which Buick , Chevrolet and Oldsmobile models were manufactured; it was the only Canadian automobile plant outside of Ontario . The city has been a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association since 2000 .
