Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel ( Cégep for short ) is an educational institution in Québec ( Canada ) that has existed since 1967, in which technical and pre-university training takes place. As a certificate, you receive a “Diplôme d'études collégiales” (DEC) or an “attestation d'études collégiales” after graduation. The number of Cégeps rose rapidly from twelve in 1967 to 48 in 1998.

Two types of training lead to the DEC:

  • The pre-university programs, which last two years (i.e. four semesters ), prepare you for studying at a university .
  • The technical training courses usually last three years (six semesters) and prepare directly for entry into the labor market , but can also be the basis for a university visit.
