Verchères is a municipality in the Canadian province of Québec . It is located on the south bank of the Saint Lawrence River in the administrative region of Montérégie .

history

Founded in 1672, the Verchères settlement was the scene of an Iroquois attack in the 17th century , foiled by the ingenuity of a 14-year-old girl named Madeleine, now known as Madeleine de Verchères . A cast iron statue of the heroine is now on the site of the former fortification wall of the settlement on the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

A rowing boat, the Verchères sloop, was developed in Verchères at the end of the 19th century . A copy of this type of boat is exhibited in Jean-Marie Moreau Park in summer and autumn.

Verchères' motto is “In Tenebris Lumen Rectis Corde”, in English “From shadow comes light for a right heart”. The streets are named after the residents and famous people from the region.

The population of Verchères is growing steadily, in 2001 the population was 4782 and in 2010 it reached 5528 inhabitants.
