The Rivière Saint-Maurice is a left tributary of the Saint Lawrence River in the Canadian province of Québec .

It is 563 km long and drains an area of 43,300 km². The river has its source in the Gouin Reservoir in the middle of the Canadian Shield , flows south and flows into the stream immediately east of the town of Trois-Rivières .

The Algonquians originally called the river Metaberutin , which roughly means "outflow of the wind". The Attikamek in turn called the river Tapiskoan Sibi ("thread needle"). Jacques Cartier named him Rivière de Fouez in 1535 . In the second half of the 17th century, Maurice Poulin de La Fontaine owned properties along the river and the name derived from his first name finally caught on around 1730. The Mauricie administrative region is named after the river .

During the 18th century, fur traders used the Saint-Maurice as a preferred trade route to the north. In the second half of the 19th century, forestry developed into an important branch of the economy, and because of the abundant water power , numerous paper mills were also located there. In the Forges Saint-Maurice near Trois-Rivières, the first heavy-duty industrial enterprise in the province, steel was produced from 1738 to 1883 .

Hydropower plants and dams

Along the river are a number of major hydroelectric power plants operated by Hydro-Québec (HQ). In the downstream direction these are:
