history

The Franciscans came to Kyritz in the 13th century. A Bible still in the town hall around the turn of the century named the year 1225 as the year of construction of the monastery church, but the existing structure is ascribed to the second half of the 14th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1303. Since the 1270s, the monastery belonged to the Brandenburg custody of the Saxon Franciscan Province ( Saxonia ) and was part of the Havelberg diocese .

The monastery was in the north-west of the city, on the city wall near the Hamburger Tor. It was supported by the citizens, especially by the cloth makers' guild, and the burial places of several noble families were in the monastery church . Some well-known members of Saxonia came from Kyritz : Fr. Thomas von Kyritz was Provincial Minister of the Order Province from 1307 to 1316 , Fr. Matthias Döring held this office from 1427 to 1461. He was born in Kyritz in 1400, studied at Oxford, became professor of theology in Erfurt in 1424 and was involved in founding the theological faculty in Rostock. As a specialist theologian, he took part in the Council of Basel from 1432 to 1440 . From 1443 to 1449 he was also general minister of a part of the Franciscan order, who on the side of the counter-pope Felix V. In 1461 he retired to the monastery in Kyritz, where he died on July 24, 1469.

In the dispute over the poverty issue in the Franciscan order in the 15th century, the Kyritz Franciscans took a moderate position and were therefore in 1518 by the order leadership in Rome of the newly founded Saxon order province of St. John the Baptist , which included convents with a less strict interpretation of the rules of the order. However, the Order Province went under due to the Reformation in 1540. Kyritz reached the Reformation in 1539, the Franciscan monastery there was dissolved in 1552. In the same year the monastery church and the adjoining buildings became the property of the city of Kyritz with the proviso that it be used for the poor. Other owners followed later. For several decades the church served as a garrison church for the stationed military. In 1781, the now dilapidated monastery buildings were auctioned for demolition. This included the church, the cemetery and the monastery walls that were still standing at the time. According to the contract, the parts of the monastery church that still exist today had to remain standing. Residential and stable buildings were built on part of the former cemetery.

Current

From 1995 the historical association “Kyritzer Knattermimen” restored the monastery garden. A cabaret for 300 spectators was set up between the ruins of the monastery church. Various events take place there, such as theater performances (“Theater nights in the monastery garden”), music festivals, classical concerts and book readings. The city of Kyritz has been renovating the area since 2017 and will develop it into the Kyritz monastery district cultural center with a city history museum, tourist information office, event building and city library in the coming years.
