Baie-Saint-Paul on the river delta of the Rivière du Gouffre |
Baie-Saint-Paul is a city ( ville ) and capital of the MRC Charlevoix in the Canadian province of Québec .
It is located on the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River 97 km northeast of the provincial capital Québec on the river delta of the Rivière du Gouffre .
Baie-Saint-Paul has had city rights since 1913. According to the 2006 census, the city had 7,288 inhabitants, but only 7,146 inhabitants according to the latest census from 2016. The area is 5.98 km².
The world-famous circus company Cirque du Soleil was founded in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1984 .
The city was the cultural capital of Canada in 2007 (Capitale culturelle du Canada). Certainly because of the large number - currently there are over 25 - large and small art galleries (Musée d'art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul), international art events (Symposium international d'art contemporain) and the image, the artist city (Festival en peinture Rêves d'Automne) to be in the entire province of Québec. It is said that the special light, the maritime climate and the landscape have always inspired painters, including such important ones as Jean-Paul Lemieux and Marc-Aurèle Fortin .
From June to October a private train connection, " Le Train de Charlevoix ", connects the city with Québec to the south-west and with La Malbaie to the north-east. The route of 125 km leads directly along the St. Lawrence River and opens up parts of the landscape that are partially only accessible by this train.
