264 athletes from 38 countries took part in these world championships. The most successful team was that of the United States with 19 medals, followed by Germany with 14 and Italy with 13 medals. 22 regional associations won at least one medal. 13 athletes were successful in both road races and time trials, six athletes successfully defended their title. The classes with the most participants were C2, C4, C5 and H2 with 28 athletes each.
In these championships the former won Formula 1 -Automobilrennfahrer Alessandro Zanardi was triple world champion in the three hand bike disciplines, contained; these were his first World Championship gold medals in paracycling.
