Carol Eduard Novak (born July 28, 1976 in Miercurea Ciuc ) is a former Romanian speed skater and current cyclist who is active on the track , mountain bike and road . He has been one of the most successful cyclists in his country since the mid-2000s.

Athletic career

Before starting his sporting career as a cyclist, Novak was active as a speed skater for ten years: he won five national titles and set a total of 30 Romanian records. In 1996 he suffered a car accident that resulted in the amputation of his right foot. Novak starts in paracycling competitions in class C4 as well as in elite races. He describes himself as a “madman” who always strives to be the first and the best.

Until 2015, Carol Eduard Novak won a total of five medals at Romanian championships of the elite: one silver in cross country , two silver in the individual time trial and once bronze in the road race .

Since 2007 Novak competes regularly in the UCI Paracycling World Championships . In 2007 he won a silver medal in road racing at the UCI Paracycling World Championships 2007 in Bordeaux . By 2015 he had won a total of seven World Championship medals, including a gold medal in the single pursuit at the UCI Paracycling World Track Championships in 2012 .

In 2008, Carol Eduard Novak won the silver medal in the individual time trial at the Summer Paralympics ; four years later, at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London , he won gold in the single track pursuit with the new world record time of 4: 40.31 minutes and silver in the individual time trial on the road. In both games he was the flag bearer of the Romanian team. Until 2016, his three medals were also the only three medals in Romania since the country first took part in the Paralympics in Heidelberg in 1972. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics , he finished fifth in the single pursuit, sixth in the individual time trial and ninth in the road race.

In 2018 Novak was nominated for the Paracycling World Championships as the only athlete in his country . In 2019 he finished third in the individual time trial at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships , and in 2020 he won silver in the single pursuit and bronze in the time trial at the Paracycling World Track Championships .

Functionary and entrepreneur

Carol Eduard Novak studied law and has been president of the Romanian Cycling Federation since 2013. He founded the cycling team Tusnad Cycling Team , which has been called Team Novak since 2018 , and was one of the initiators of the Tour of Szeklerland . In 2017 he also opened the Novak Cycling Academy for young cyclists. He runs a company he founded to manufacture prostheses .

Honors

After Novak won a gold medal at the Paralympic Games in 2012, the then Romanian President Traian Băsescu awarded the Ordinul "Meritul Sportiv" ( Order for Merit in Sport ).
