Sandra Graf (born December 9, 1969 ) is a Swiss athlete in the racing wheelchair discipline and multiple participant in the Paralympic Summer Games .

Life

Graf's sporting activities - she went skiing - began in her childhood. As a teenager she became a member of the Teufen gymnastics club . Here she devoted herself to athletics, competed in large field gymnastics and gave swimming lessons. She also met her future husband at the Teufen gymnastics club. In 1991 there was a sudden turning point in Graf's life. While doing gymnastics from the rings, she fell with her back on the floor, broke her spine between the eleventh and twelfth thoracic vertebrae and suffered a contusion of the spinal cord . After her accident, Graf was immediately taken to the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital and operated on. The next day she was transferred to the Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwil. Already during her rehabilitation she began to do sports again and took a monoski course. Athletics, however, exerted a particular attraction on her, so that Graf began training in the racing wheelchair about a year after her accident . In 1995 she took part in an international marathon for the first time.

After the birth of her second daughter in 1997, she intensified her training in order to take part in the Paralympic Games. Graf finally represented Switzerland in 2000 in Sydney , 2004 in Athens , 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London. There she won the bronze medal in the marathon and the gold medal in the individual time trial in cycling.

Graf is married and has two daughters. She lives in Gais .
