The Swiss Paraplegic Center (SPZ) is a special clinic for paraplegics in Nottwil in the canton of Lucerne , Switzerland .

history

In 1975 Guido A. Zäch founded the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation (SPS). At that time, Zäch was working as the chief physician of the paraplegic center in Basel, which suffered from limited space. His first attempt to build the center in Risch ( Canton Zug ) failed due to popular resistance. On the further search one struck gold in Nottwil. On July 5, 1985, the citizens of the municipality decided in favor of the paraplegic center. The groundbreaking took place on March 12, 1987, and the first patients arrived on October 1, 1990. The center initially had 104 beds and 250 full-time positions. The first extensions were necessary as early as 1998.

There are 150 beds including an intensive care unit available; 95.3% of these were occupied in 2017. In 2017, around 51,848 days of care were provided for 1,115 inpatients (initial rehabilitation or follow-up treatment) in the SPZ. The SPZ employs 1171 people (as of 2017).

tasks

The SPZ is a private, nationally recognized special clinic for first aid, acute treatment, holistic rehabilitation and lifelong care of paraplegics and people with paraplegic syndromes. The special clinic belongs to the Swiss Paraplegic Group (SPG), which forms an integral network for the holistic rehabilitation of paraplegics. The network is sponsored by the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation (SPS), which is also based in Nottwil.

In addition, at the SPZ Orthotec , which was founded in 1994 and which takes care of wheelchairs and vehicle conversions, there is the Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) and the Swiss Paraplegic Association (SPV).
