Hans-Peter Durst (born May 24, 1958 in Kaufbeuren ) is a German paracycler who competes in the T2 (tricycle) category. At the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , he won two gold medals.

biography

In 1994 Hans-Peter Durst had a traffic accident in which he lost his sense of balance, his field of vision was restricted to the left in both eyes, and he also suffered from impaired responsiveness. He cannot walk without aids. He was advised to start cycling on a tricycle. After taking part in the cycling tour of the Ardey and cycling tourism in 1999, the desire arose for a performance-oriented sports career. In addition to running with sticks and swimming, cycling was an essential part of the training. Durst is married and has two children.

Sports career

After rehabilitation , Durst began cycling on a standard tricycle. Encouraged by friends, I wanted to run as well. At first this was only possible with walking sticks , later with Nordic walking sticks . Durst has since completed numerous runs and several marathons . He also starts as a triathlete . He won several German championship titles. His favorite discipline is the individual time trial on the bike.

Durst rides a three-wheeled bicycle specially made for him . He became world champion in the individual time trial in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019 , won bronze in 2011, silver in 2013, and in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 the world title in road races . In 2017 and 2018 he won the overall ranking of the World Cup.

Durst's participation in the Paralympics 2012 in London was endangered by an accident during a training trip on Dortmund's Phoenix Lake . A drunk cyclist collided with his bike, and Durst sustained serious injuries to both hands and a broken left thumb that required surgery three weeks before the Paralympics started. His bike was also badly damaged in this accident. It was not until August 30 that his doctors gave him permission to participate. He started in the individual time trial and won the silver medal after a distance of 7.6 kilometers.

As the oldest German participant in the 2016 Summer Paralympics , Durst started in Rio de Janeiro in the individual time trial at the Paracycling class T2 and won the gold medal. This was despite the fact that his saddle broke off after 500 meters on the 15-kilometer route, and he had to ride the distance while standing with the saddle loose. Two days later, Hans-Peter Durst also won the road race. With two gold medals, he was the most successful German cyclist in Rio.

At the 2017 UCI Paracycling Road World Championships , Durst was once again world champion in both racing disciplines. The following year he was unable to compete in the 2018 UCI Paracycling Road World Championships because he suffered an epileptic fit shortly before the start of the races . In the following months he struggled with other health problems and was unable to compete in any World Cup races. Nevertheless, he was nominated for the UCI Road World Championships 2019 in Emmen , the Netherlands . There he won gold in the time trial and silver in the road race.
