Shelley Gautier (born October 31, 1968 in Niagara Falls ) is a Canadian paracycler .

biography

Private and professional

Shelley Gautier is a physiotherapist by profession . In 2001 she had an accident with her mountain bike and suffered severe head injuries. She was in a coma for six weeks and has been paralyzed on one side since then. A year after her accident, she started cycling again. In 2007 she trained 50 kilometers a day.

Athletic career

Shelley Gaultier starts on a tricycle in class T1 and was one of the first female athletes in this performance class. In 2009 she won her first world championship medal in road racing. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , she took bronze in the individual time trial . Up to and including 2018 she was in road races and time trials 16 times.

Honors (selection) and commitment

In 2015 Gaultier was nominated for the Laureus Award for the World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability . In 2014 and 2015 she was named Female Cyclist of the Year by the Ontario Cycling Association . She was one of the torch bearers at the Parapan American Games 2015 . In 2015, Gautier was inducted into the newly formed Toronto Sports Hall of Honor . In a ranking by the Canadian Cycling Magazine website , she was ranked fifth among the top ten Canadian cyclists of the 2010s.

She founded the Shelley Gautier Para-Sport Foundation to support disabled people in sports.
