Arnoud Nijhuis (born July 9, 1989 in Zwolle ) is a former Dutch paracycler in class C1.

Arnoud Nijhuis was born with Möbius syndrome , a congenital anomaly. Nijhuis therefore suffers, among other things, from paralysis of the facial muscles, as the cranial nerves required for this are not created. This also leads to difficulty swallowing and speaking. He also has club feet , the left side of the body is less developed, and the shoulder muscles are poorly developed. Nijhuis had to lie in a cast for months , his Achilles tendon was surgically lengthened and he had to wear special shoes. When he was two years old, his eyes and left hand were operated on.

Athletic career

Nijhuis started playing soccer at the age of six . Although he had numerous injuries to his feet and legs, he continued to play into adulthood; then he tried running , but also had to contend with injuries there. In 2010 he started cycling in the local cycling club. During a talent search day in Rotterdam , he met the Dutch national paracycling trainer Eelke van der Wal . This convinced him to become active in competitive cycling. He was classified in category C1.

In 2013 Arnoud Nijhuis became world champion in road racing. In 2016 he won the world title in the 1000 meter time trial on the track . In the same year he won two medals on the track at the Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , a silver in the time trial, a bronze in the single pursuit . After his return from Brazil he was celebrated with a parade in his hometown Balkbrug .

At the UCI Paracycling World Championships in 2018 , Nijhuis took silver in the single pursuit and bronze in the scratch . The goal of Nijhuis was to compete in the Summer Paralympics 2020 in Tokyo . So that he was financially secure, the foundation Arnoud Top naar Topsport was founded. However, due to ongoing health problems, he had to end his sports career in the summer of 2018.
