Andrea Eskau (born March 21, 1971 in Apolda ) is a German handbike athlete . She is currently starting for the USC Magdeburg . In addition, she also competes in biathlon and cross-country skiing in winter .

Career

The qualified psychologist, who has been paralyzed since a bicycle accident in 1998 , competed in her first competition in 2002. So far, she has won 10 world championship titles and since 2003 has won at least one German championship title per year. In addition, she has won many World Cup races and numerous city marathons. At the Hamburg Marathon 2011 she set a new world record in handbiking with 1:04:09 h and undercut the old record of the Dutch woman Monique van der Vorst by almost eight minutes.

At the 2008 Summer Paralympics , Andrea Eskau won the gold medal in the handbike rider's road race.

After only a few months of training, she started at the Winter Paralympics 2010 in Vancouver in the disciplines of biathlon and cross-country skiing, where she won the bronze medal on the 10 km biathlon and the silver medal on the 5 km cross-country ski run.
At the Summer Paralympics 2012 in London, Andrea Eskau won the gold medal in both the individual time trial and the road race.

At the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi on March 8, she won her first gold medal at the Winter Paralympics on the 6 km biathlon course. Four days later she won her second bronze medal at the Winter Paralympics in the 1 km sprint, which she was stripped of. On the last day of the Winter Paralympics, she won gold in cross-country skiing over 5 km.

In 2016 Andrea Eskau won the gold medal in the road race and the silver medal in the individual time trial at the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro . At the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships 2017 in Pietermaritzburg , South Africa , she won gold in road races and in the individual time trial as well as bronze in the mixed relay.

In 2018 she was nominated for the Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang and selected as the flag bearer of the German team. On March 11, 2018, she won the silver medal in the cross-country skiing competition over 12 km. Two days later she won the competition in biathlon over 10 km and on the last day of the biathlon competition over 12.5 km. She won further silver medals in cross-country skiing in the sprint competition over 1.1 kilometers and over 5 km. On the final day of the games in South Korea, she won a bronze medal with Steffen Lehmker and Alexander Ehler in the mixed relay over 4 × 2.5 km. With two gold, three silver and one bronze medal, she was the most successful German participant in the 2018 Paralympics. In the same year, she won gold in road races and silver in the time trial at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships 2018 .

At the Nordic Para-Ski World Championships in Prince George, Canada in February 2019, Andrea Eskau won the bronze medal in all three biathlon competitions behind the dominant US-Americans Oksana Masters and Kendall Gretsch . In cross-country skiing, she also achieved third place over the sprint distance and fourth place in the other two competitions.
