Steffen Warias (born January 1, 1985 in Tübingen ) is a German paracycler in class C3.
Athletic career
Steffen Warias was born with club feet . This foot deformity was treated surgically when he was a child, but his lower leg muscles are only slightly developed, the right ankle is completely stiff and the movement in the left is restricted.
In 2003, Warias started cycling, initially as a hobby. In the following years he competed in C-Amateur cycling races and took part in cycling marathons and tourism trips. In 2009 he competed in his first Paracycling race, and in the same year he was appointed to the German national team.
2010 Steffen Warias was in Canadian Baie-Comeau world champion in the road race, three years later he was this success, also in Baie-Comeau, repeat. In 2012 he started at the Summer Paralympics in London and won the silver medal in the road race. In 2014 he became vice world champion in road racing and in 2015 in the individual time trial . In 2015, he also won the overall World Cup. In 2016 he became German champion for the fourth time in Cologne. In the same year he was nominated for the 2016 Summer Paralympics , where he won the gold medal in the C1-3 road race. At the 2017 UCI Road World Championships in Pietermaritzburg , South Africa , he won the silver medal in road racing.
Honors
For his success at Paralympic Games, Steffen Warias was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf in both 2012 and 2016 .
In December 2016 he was named Baden Disabled Sportsman of the Year .
Professional
Warias is a chemist by profession . He lives and works in Switzerland and starts there for the Allschwil Veloclub . (As of 2016)
