Nigel Barley
Nigel Frederick Barley (* 1947 in London ) is a British anthropologist and author.
Career
Barley was born in Kingston upon Thames , London in 1947 . He studied modern languages at Cambridge and ethnology at Oxford and conducted two years of field research in the north of Cameroon with the Dowayo people in 1977 and 1978 . This stay is the basis of his scientific publication Symbolic structures. An exploration of the culture of the Dowayos and his humorous experience report Traumatic Tropics. Notes from my mud hut. Another stay led him again to the Dowayo, described in The caterpillar plague, which is linked to the traumatic tropics . He undertook further studies with the Toraja on Sulawesi . From 1981 to 2003 he worked as curator at the British Museum in London, where he was responsible for the West and North Africa departments. His book Sad Islanders is about the English from the perspective of an ethnologist and is based on a six-part television series in which he also acted as an author and speaker. In 1992, The Lion of Singapore, a biography by Stamford Raffles, was published . Many of his books have been translated into German.
