A stay abroad (also often, e.g. in Swiss High German , without Fugen-s ) is understood to mean any stay outside the home country , regardless of whether it lasts only a few hours or several decades.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, one or more stays abroad, also known as grand tours , were part of the educational ideal . Numerous philosophers and poets also used these stays for literary purposes.
