The rainbow jersey is worn in cycling by the reigning world champions of the UCI World Cycling Federation .

The rainbow jersey was awarded for the first time in 1927 on the occasion of the first UCI road world championships for professionals at the Nürburgring . The first bearer was Alfredo Binda . Before that, world champions were given sashes .

The basic color of the jersey is white, at chest height there are five circumferential horizontal stripes in the colors blue, red, black, yellow and green (from top to bottom). The design of the jersey for the individual cycling disciplines differs in small details in the representation of the rainbow.

A world champion has the right but also the duty to wear the rainbow jersey until the day before the world championships of the following year, but only in races in the same discipline in which he won the title. Title holders who do not wear their jerseys contrary to the rule will be fined by the UCI. Former world champions are entitled to wear the rainbow stripes on the sleeve hem and collar of their jerseys. World champions who are proven to have violated anti-doping rules are no longer allowed to wear the jersey.

If the wearer of the rainbow jersey leads in a stage race or a World Cup series , the leader jersey for that race or series (such as the “ yellow jersey ” in the “ Tour de France ”) takes precedence.

After the launch of this competition in 2012, no more rainbow jerseys will be awarded for winning the world championship in team time trial. Rather, the jersey of the victorious cycling team will be provided with a corresponding logo in the following calendar year. The world champion in the individual time trial is no longer entitled to wear his rainbow jersey in the team time trial.
