The World Championships in cyclo-cross (also Radcross or earlier cross-country ), should be from the Cycling Union UCI organized and held every year in January, the end of the cross-country season instead. The venues are reassigned every year. The first cyclo-cross World Championship for male professionals took place in Paris in 1950 , the amateurs joined in 1967 and the juniors in 1980. In addition, a World Cup title has been awarded to the U23s since 1996. The women's world championship has also been held since 2000, so the championships today (as of 2014) consist of four competitions, as the division between amateurs and professionals has been eliminated for men since 1994.

As with the other UCI World Championships , the participants in the Cross World Championships compete for their national cycling association. The winners of the world championships have the right or the duty to wear the “ rainbow jersey” for one year in all official races .

In the men's area, cross-sport has been dominated by the Belgians for a number of years : in the last four years (as of 2005), Belgium took the first three places in the cross-country championship. The record winner is also a Belgian, Erik De Vlaeminck , who triumphed seven times between 1966 and 1973. In the women’s category, the German Hanka Kupfernagel has won four titles so far.
